How this is worked out
The formula
Add tax: tax = price × rate; total = price × (1 + rate) Extract tax: price = total ÷ (1 + rate); tax = total − price Note: to remove 7% tax you divide by 1.07 — you do not subtract 7% of the total

About this calculator
Sales tax in the US is a percentage added at the register, and the percentage depends on where the register is: a state rate, usually plus county and city rates stacked on top. Forty-five states and DC charge one; combined rates range from a few percent to more than 10%. This calculator does the two things people actually need — add the tax to a sticker price, or work out how much tax was inside a total on a receipt or an expense claim.
How to use it
Pick the direction. In add mode, enter the pre-tax price and your combined rate; you get the tax and the total. In extract mode, enter the total you paid and the rate; you get the pre-tax price and the tax portion — useful for expense reports, bookkeeping and comparing tax-included prices. Don't know your rate? It's printed on any local receipt, or look it up on your state revenue department's site by address, since city and district rates vary within a state.
The reverse-calculation trap
To back tax out of a total you divide by (1 + rate), you don't subtract the rate. On a $107 total at 7%, the tax is $7 (107 ÷ 1.07 = 100), not $7.49 (7% of 107). The second method overstates the tax and understates the price every time, and it's the most common mistake in expense claims.
What's taxed, and where it isn't
Five states have no statewide sales tax: Alaska (though localities can charge), Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon. Most states exempt or reduce the rate on groceries and prescription drugs, and many hold sales-tax holidays for school supplies or emergency gear. Services are taxed in some states and not others. Online purchases are generally taxed at the rate for your delivery address since the 2018 Wayfair decision. If you itemize, the IRS lets you deduct either state income tax or state sales tax, and its online sales tax deduction calculator estimates the latter from your income and location.
Sales tax vs VAT
Outside the US most countries use a value-added tax that's built into the displayed price. The arithmetic for extracting it is identical — divide by (1 + rate) — but shoppers rarely need to, because the shelf price is what you pay. The VAT calculator handles those rates and the input/output split businesses need.
Frequently asked questions
▸How do I calculate sales tax on a price?
Multiply the price by the rate as a decimal: $100 × 0.07 = $7 of tax, for a $107 total. Equivalently, multiply the price by 1.07 to get the total in one step.
▸How do I find the pre-tax price from a total?
Divide the total by 1 plus the rate as a decimal. $107 ÷ 1.07 = $100. Subtracting 7% of the total instead gives the wrong answer.
▸What sales tax rate should I enter?
Your combined rate — state plus any county, city and special-district taxes — for the address where the sale happens (or, for online orders, where it's delivered). It's printed on receipts and published by your state's department of revenue.
▸Which US states have no sales tax?
Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have none at any level; Alaska has no state tax but some municipalities levy their own.
