Percentages add and split: 15% is 10% plus half of it, and 45% is 50% minus 5%. That is the whole trick to doing them in your head.

About this calculator
"Percent" means "per hundred", so every percentage problem is a ratio with 100 in it somewhere. Pick the question you're asking, type the two numbers, and the calculator shows the answer and each step of the arithmetic.
The five common questions
- What is 15% of 200? Convert the percent to a decimal (0.15) and multiply: 30.
- 30 is what percent of 200? Divide and multiply by 100: 15%.
- Percent change from 200 to 230? Difference over the original: 30 ÷ 200 = 15% increase.
- 30 is 15% of what? Divide by the decimal: 30 ÷ 0.15 = 200.
- Percentage difference between 200 and 230? Difference over the average of the two: about 14%. Use this when neither number is the "original".
Percent change vs. percentage points
Going from 10% to 15% is a 5 percentage-point rise but a 50% increase. When you compare two percentages, say which one you mean.

▸How do I calculate a percentage of a number?
Divide the percent by 100 to get a decimal, then multiply. 25% of 80 is 0.25 × 80 = 20.
▸How do I work out what percent one number is of another?
Divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100. 20 out of 80 is 20 ÷ 80 × 100 = 25%.
▸What's the difference between percent change and percent difference?
Percent change measures growth from a starting value, so direction matters. Percent difference compares two values symmetrically using their average, so it's the same whichever you list first.
▸Can a percentage be more than 100?
Yes. 300 is 150% of 200, and a price that triples has increased 200%.
