How this is worked out

The formula

converted = amount × (rate_to ÷ rate_from)

Rates are quoted against a single base, so converting between two other
currencies divides one by the other — a cross rate.

About this calculator

This converter uses the European Central Bank's daily reference rates, the benchmark most institutions quote against. The ECB publishes them each working day at around 16:00 Central European Time, so the figure you see is the most recent published rate rather than a live dealing price. The page always states which day's rates it is using.

What the rate does and does not include

A reference rate is a mid-market rate: the midpoint between what buyers and sellers are quoting. It is the honest answer to "what is this money worth", but it is not what you will be charged. Banks, card networks and bureaux add a spread, usually between 0.5% and 3%, and often a fixed fee on top. Airport desks are worse. Use this number to judge whether an offer is fair, not to predict the exact amount that lands in your account.

Cross rates

The ECB quotes every currency against the euro. Converting Japanese yen to Canadian dollars therefore divides one quote by the other, which is what the working above shows. That is exactly how the market derives a cross rate, and any tiny discrepancy against a broker's quote is their spread, not an error here.

Weekends and holidays

No rates are published on weekends or ECB holidays, so a Saturday visit shows Friday's rates. That is the correct behaviour: there is no official rate for a day the market did not set one.

Frequently asked questions

Where do these exchange rates come from?

The European Central Bank's daily euro foreign exchange reference rates, published each working day at around 16:00 CET. The page states the date of the rates it is showing.

Why is the rate different from my bank's?

Reference rates are mid-market: the midpoint of the buying and selling price. Banks and card networks add a margin, commonly 0.5% to 3%, and sometimes a flat fee. The difference you see is that margin.

Are these rates live?

They are the most recent published daily rates, refreshed hourly. They are not tick-by-tick market prices; no free source gives those, and for everyday questions the daily reference rate is the number institutions actually quote against.

Why do rates not change at the weekend?

The ECB only publishes on working days, so Saturday and Sunday show Friday's rates. There is no official rate for a day the market did not set one.

How do I convert between two non-dollar currencies?

Pick them both; the calculator divides one rate by the other to get the cross rate, and the working shows each step.
