Washington levies no individual income tax. There is no state rate schedule, no state standard deduction, no state withholding on your paycheck and no state return to file on wages. Washington raises its money from sales tax and a gross-receipts business tax. It taxes no wages at all, but it does tax large long-term capital gains — see the notes below.
What no state income tax actually means
- Federal income tax still applies in full. A no-income-tax state changes one line on your payslip, not the biggest one — federal withholding, Social Security at 6.2% and Medicare at 1.45% all come out exactly as they would anywhere else.
- There is no Washington return to file on wages, and no state withholding line on your paycheck. That is real administrative relief, not just a rate of zero.
- You can still owe income tax to a different state. If you live in Washington but work across a state line, that state generally taxes the income you earn there — the neighbouring pages below are the ones to check.
- A zero income tax is not a zero tax burden. States without one raise the money somewhere else, usually sales tax, property tax or a resource levy, and those land differently on different households. Washington raises its money from sales tax and a gross-receipts business tax. It taxes no wages at all, but it does tax large long-term capital gains — see the notes below.

Assumptions
- Ordinary-income rate schedules only; no credits, AMT, capital-gains rates, QBI deduction or the 2025–2028 senior deduction.
- Standard deduction (plus additional amounts for 65+/blind) or your itemized figure, whichever is larger; no dependent-filer limitation.
- Married filing separately uses half the joint federal thresholds, per the IRS schedule, and the state's single-filer schedule.
- State tax uses each state's published rate schedule, standard deduction and personal exemption for the tax year shown with the results; the source URL and year for the state you pick are printed above the results, along with the simplifications made for that state.
- State figures exclude county, municipal and city income taxes, itemized deductions, retirement and capital-gains exclusions, and credits that phase out. Unlisted states fall back to the flat rate you enter.

How the neighbours compare
Washington borders 2 other jurisdictions. Moving across a state line is the one way most people can actually change which of these schedules applies to them, so here is the same income run through each of them.
| State | Rate structure | $50,000 | $75,000 | $150,000 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Washington | No income tax | $0 | $0 | $0 |
| Idaho | 0% – 5.3% | $1,560 | $2,885 | $6,860 |
| Oregon | 4.75% – 9.9% | $3,561 | $5,748 | $12,566 |
State income tax on a single filer, after each state’s own deductions. Federal tax is identical wherever you live, so the difference between these rows is the whole difference.
What these Washington figures leave out
Recorded against Washington in the data rather than glossed over, because they change real bills.
- Washington levies no tax on wages, but does levy a 7% excise tax on long-term capital gains above a large annual standard deduction (9% on gains over $1 million). That is not modelled here.
- Washington has enacted a 9.9% income tax on adjusted gross income above $1 million (SB 6346), effective 1 January 2028. It does not apply to any year this calculator covers, and is not modelled.
