About this calculator
Military time is the 24-hour clock written as four digits without a colon: 0000 is midnight, 1200 is noon, 1430 is 2:30 PM, 2359 is one minute to midnight. It removes the AM/PM ambiguity that causes missed flights and mis-scheduled medication, which is why hospitals, airlines, the armed forces, emergency services and most of the world outside the US use it.
Converting in your head
- PM to military: add 12 to the hour. 3:00 PM → 1500. 9:45 PM → 2145. Noon is the exception: 12:00 PM stays 1200.
- AM to military: keep the hour, pad to two digits. 7:15 AM → 0715. Midnight is the exception: 12:00 AM → 0000.
- Military to 12-hour: if the hour is 13 or more, subtract 12 and say PM. 1800 → 6:00 PM. 0000 → 12:00 AM; 1200 → 12:00 PM.
A shortcut for afternoon times: subtract 2 and drop the leading 1 — 1600 → 4 PM, 1900 → 7 PM.
Saying it
Read the digits in pairs, then "hours": 0800 is "zero eight hundred hours", 1430 is "fourteen thirty hours", 2115 is "twenty-one fifteen hours". Some traditions say "oh" instead of "zero". Civilians using the 24-hour clock just say "fourteen thirty".
Midnight: 0000 or 2400?
Both appear. 0000 marks the start of a day and 2400 the end of the previous one, so a shift "ending at 2400 Tuesday" ends at the same instant as "0000 Wednesday". Timetables and ISO 8601 use 00:00; 24:00 is allowed only as an end time.
Time zones
Military messages add a letter for the zone: Z (Zulu) is UTC, so "1500Z" is 3 PM UTC. Local time is often written with the letter of that zone (e.g. R for UTC−5). This converter handles the clock time only — add or subtract your offset from UTC separately.
Reading the results
The converted time is the headline; "How to say it" gives the spoken form; the ISO line is the colon-separated 24-hour format used by computers; and minutes since midnight is useful for timesheets and scheduling arithmetic. The chart lists every hour of the day in all three forms.
