About this calculator
Pick a date and the calculator tells you how many days are left — and how that breaks down into weeks, hours, minutes, weekends and working days. It counts from the start of today, so "days until" is the number of midnights still to pass, which is also the number of sleeps until the morning of the event.
How the count works
If the event is tomorrow, that's 1 day. If it's today, 0. The count is done on calendar dates using whole-day arithmetic, so daylight-saving changes and time zones can't shift it. For a time-of-day count (a launch at 14:00, a deadline at 17:00), set the hour under More options; hours and minutes then include the partial day.
Change Counting from to count between two future dates — useful for "how many working days between the start of term and the exam".
Reading the results
- Weeks and days is the friendlier version of a large day count: 108 days is 15 weeks and 3 days.
- Weekends in between counts full Saturday–Sunday pairs before the date — the number of free weekends you have to prepare.
- Working days are Mondays to Fridays, without public holidays. Subtract the holidays in your country for a true business-day count.
- Falls on a tells you the weekday, which decides whether Christmas gives you a long weekend.
Counting to something that comes round every year
Most countdowns are to an event that repeats: Christmas, a birthday, an anniversary, the start of term. Set What are you counting to? to the holiday and the count always runs to the next one. On 26 December it rolls over to the following year on its own, so a bookmarked link or a countdown embedded on another site keeps working without being edited.
Nineteen holidays are built in, including the ones whose date moves: Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November, Memorial Day the last Monday of May, and Easter follows the lunar rule, so all three are worked out for whichever year the next occurrence falls in rather than looked up.
For anything else that repeats — a birthday, a wedding anniversary, a renewal date — choose A date I'll pick, every year and enter the date. Only the month and day matter; the year you type is ignored. A 29 February date counts to the 28th in common years, which is the convention birthdays follow.
Holidays outside this list, and ones set by other calendars — Diwali, Ramadan, Chinese New Year, Rosh Hashanah — move in ways the Gregorian rules above can't express, so look up the date and count to it as a one-off.

Frequently asked questions
▸How many days until Christmas?
Choose Christmas under “What are you counting to?” and the count runs to the next 25 December, rolling over to the following year on Boxing Day. The count is the number of midnights left, so on 24 December it reads 1.
▸Can the countdown repeat every year?
Yes. Pick one of the nineteen built-in holidays, or choose “A date I’ll pick, every year” and enter a birthday or anniversary. The target is worked out from the day you look, not stored, so the answer stays right without the link being edited.
▸What happens to a 29 February birthday?
In common years it counts to 28 February, the convention most birthdays follow. In a leap year it counts to the 29th.
▸How do you know when Thanksgiving or Easter falls?
Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November and Memorial Day the last Monday of May, both computed for the year in question. Easter uses the anonymous Gregorian computus, the standard algorithm for the date of Easter Sunday.
▸Does the count include today?
No. It counts the days remaining after today — the number of sleeps until the morning of the event. If you need both ends counted, add one.
▸How many weeks until a date?
Divide the days by 7 and keep the remainder. 108 days is 15 weeks and 3 days. The calculator shows this directly.
▸How many working days until a date?
Calendar days minus the Saturdays and Sundays before the date. Public holidays aren't removed since they vary by country, so subtract those yourself.
▸Why is my count one day off from another site?
Some countdowns include the target day itself or count from the current time rather than midnight. This one counts whole days from the start of today to the start of the target date.
