About this calculator
Gematria assigns a number to each letter of an alphabet and adds them up for a word or phrase. This page does that arithmetic for the ciphers people actually use, and shows the letter-by-letter working so you can check every step.
What it is, historically
Letter-numerals came first and gematria followed. Greek and Hebrew had no separate digits: the same letters served as numbers, so iota was both a letter and 10, and rho was both a letter and 100. Once every word already has a number attached, comparing words by their totals is a short step, and scribes in the Hellenistic world took it. The Greek version is called isopsephy — "equal pebbles", from counting with stones — and the best-known example is a piece of graffiti from Pompeii: "I love her whose number is 545". The Hebrew tradition, gematria, runs from rabbinic literature through Kabbalah and is still used in wordplay, mnemonics and commentary.
English gematria is a modern invention, roughly a century old, with no manuscript tradition behind it. It simply numbers the Latin alphabet, most often A = 1 to Z = 26.
The ciphers here
English Ordinal is the plain A = 1 … Z = 26. Full Reduction (sometimes "Pythagorean") cycles 1–9, so J restarts at 1 and S restarts at 1 again. Reverse Ordinal counts backwards from A = 26, and Reverse Full Reduction reduces that to 1–9. English Sumerian is the ordinal times six, which despite the name has nothing to do with Sumer. Hebrew uses mispar hechrachi, the standard method, where the five final letter forms take the same value as their base letters. Greek isopsephy includes digamma, koppa and sampi, the three letters kept in the Greek alphabet only for their numeric values of 6, 90 and 900.
What a matching number means
Nothing. This is worth stating plainly, because most gematria sites are built on implying otherwise.
A cipher is a fixed table of small numbers, so the values it produces are crowded into a narrow range. A seven-letter English word has an ordinal value between 7 and 182 — fewer than 180 possible totals for the tens of thousands of seven-letter strings in the language. Collisions are not remarkable; they are forced by counting. Any two phrases of similar length will share a total surprisingly often, and if you are free to switch cipher, add or drop a word, include or exclude a title, you can reach almost any target number you like. That freedom is why "matches" are easy to find and why they carry no information.
Use it as a word game, a way of reading historical texts that used letters as numerals, or a puzzle mechanic. It is arithmetic on spelling, and it predicts nothing.
