53-week years come roughly every five or six, but the pattern is irregular: a year has 53 when 1 January is a Thursday, or a Wednesday in a leap year.
How this is worked out
The formula
Exact weeks = days in the year ÷ 7
= 365 ÷ 7 = 52.1429, or 366 ÷ 7 = 52.2857
ISO-8601 weeks = 53 when 1 January falls on a Thursday,
or on a Wednesday in a leap year;
52 otherwise.
Equivalently: a year has 53 ISO weeks exactly when it contains 53 Thursdays.Open How it’s calculated above to see this worked through with your own numbers.

About this calculator
"How many weeks in a year" has three correct answers, and which one you need depends entirely on what you are about to do with it.
52 — the one everybody means
Fifty-two weeks is 364 days. A year is 365 or 366. So 52 is always one or two days short, and dividing an annual salary by 52 gives a weekly figure that, paid 52 times, does not add up to the salary.
It is the right answer for conversation and rough planning, and the wrong one for anything that has to reconcile.
52.1786 — the arithmetic one
365.2425 ÷ 7 = 52.1786 weeks in an average year; 52.1429 in a common year and 52.2857 in a leap year. This is the number to use for accruals, averages and any per-week rate that must total correctly over twelve months. Holiday accrual at "so many hours per week" uses this, not 52.
52 or 53 — the ISO one, and the one that costs money
The ISO-8601 calendar numbers weeks Monday to Sunday, and gives each week to whichever year holds its Thursday. Under that rule a year has 53 weeks when 1 January is a Thursday, or a Wednesday in a leap year — which works out at about 71 years in every 400.
In a 53-week year:
- Weekly-paid staff receive 53 pay packets, not 52.
- Fortnightly-paid staff can receive 27, not 26.
- Any annual allowance divided across pay periods — tax-free thresholds, benefit deductions, pension caps — is spread one period too thin unless payroll knows.
This is a genuine, recurring payroll problem rather than a curiosity. UK payroll has a specific "week 53" procedure for it; US biweekly payrolls hit the 27-period version roughly every 11 years. The table above shows which of the next fifteen years are affected.
Working weeks
If what you actually want is working weeks, set the days off and days per week under More options. Forty-eight is the usual answer for a UK employee with 28 days of leave; the US figure depends entirely on the employer, since there is no statutory minimum.
Frequently asked questions
▸How many weeks are in a year?
52 weeks and one day, or two days in a leap year — 52.1429 or 52.2857 exactly. On the ISO calendar a year has either 52 or 53 numbered weeks, and which one matters for payroll.
▸When does a year have 53 weeks?
When 1 January falls on a Thursday, or on a Wednesday in a leap year. That is the same as saying the year contains 53 Thursdays, because an ISO week belongs to the year holding its Thursday. It happens about 71 times in every 400 years.
▸Why does a 53-week year matter for pay?
Weekly-paid employees get 53 pay packets instead of 52, and fortnightly-paid can get 27 instead of 26. Anything divided evenly across pay periods — tax allowances, benefit deductions, pension limits — is spread one period too thin unless the payroll system accounts for it.
▸How many working weeks are in a year?
About 48 for someone with 28 days of annual leave on a five-day week, but there is no single answer — it depends entirely on the leave entitlement. Set the days off above to work out yours.
▸Should I divide my salary by 52 or 52.1786?
Use 52.1786 if the weekly figure has to add back to the annual salary, which is the case for accruals and pro-rata calculations. Use 52 only for a rough weekly number, and expect it to run one or two days short over the year.
