Teaspoons to grams

1 teaspoon of flour = 2.5 g, of sugar 4.1 g, of honey 7 g
The same measure, three different weights — which is why one conversion factor cannot exist.

grams = teaspoons × (grams per teaspoon for that ingredient)

There is no single teaspoons-to-grams factor, and any chart that gives you one is quietly assuming an ingredient. A teaspoon is a measure of volume; a gram is a measure of mass. What sits between them is density, and density is the ingredient — which is why teaspoon for teaspoon, honey outweighs flour by nearly three to one. Find the ingredient in the table below, or use the converter for an amount that is not listed.

Dry ingredients assume the spoon-and-level method: the ingredient spooned into the measure and swept flat, not scooped and packed. Scooping flour from the bag can add a fifth to the weight.

Questions

How many grams are in a teaspoon?
It depends on what is in it. A teaspoon of flour is 2.5 g, of sugar 4.1 g, of butter 4.7 g, of honey 7 g. A teaspoon measures volume and a gram measures mass, so the ingredient's density is what connects them.
How many grams is a teaspoon of flour?
2.5 g, spooned and levelled. Scooped straight from the bag it packs down and weighs more — the commonest reason a recipe comes out dry.
Is a US cup the same as a metric cup?
No. A US customary cup is 236.588 ml; the metric cup used in Australia and New Zealand is 250 ml, about 6% larger. American recipes mean the US cup, and so does this chart.
