About this calculator
This converts a number you already have — the daily average your phone or computer reports — into units that are easier to reason about: hours a week, days a year, and a share of the time you are actually awake.
Why "days a year" is the useful unit
Four and a half hours a day sounds unremarkable. The same number is 34 hours a week and about 75 twenty-four-hour days a year. Neither figure is more true than the other; the second is simply harder to skim past. The waking days figure is better still, because sleeping is not a thing you were going to spend on something else. Dividing by 16 waking hours rather than 24 gives the share of your available time, which is the honest comparison.
What the number is not
Screen time is a measure of a display being on, not of how you spent your life. The same four hours might be a day's work, a video call with a parent abroad, three chapters of a novel, a language lesson, or scrolling you would not defend. Operating-system reports mostly cannot tell these apart, they count time with the screen unlocked rather than time attended to, and they miss televisions, e-readers and work machines entirely. Averages published in the press vary by a factor of two depending on what each survey counted.
So: this calculator does arithmetic on a number you supply. It has no view on whether your number is too high, and there is no established threshold above which adults are harmed. The research that does exist is largely correlational and concentrated on adolescents, sleep and displacement effects — that is, screen use late at night pushing sleep later is a well-supported mechanism, while "hours per day" as a bare quantity is a much weaker predictor of anything.
How to use it
Enter weekday and weekend hours separately, since for most people they differ by an hour or more. Set your sleep figure honestly — it is the denominator for the share. Under More options you can split out screen time that is work, which stops a job done on a laptop from swamping the personal number, and set how many minutes a day you might realistically cut.
Reading the table
The table prices a reduction rather than recommending one. Fifteen minutes a day is 91 hours a year — about six waking days. An hour a day is 365 hours, roughly nine full working weeks. Those numbers are the reason small daily changes are worth more than occasional large ones, and they hold whichever direction you want to move: adding twenty minutes of reading a day is the same arithmetic.
If you do want to change something, the evidence is kinder to when and what than to how much: screens in the hour before sleep, and passive scrolling rather than active use, are the two things most consistently associated with worse outcomes.

Published averages range from about 4 to over 7 hours depending on what the survey counts — phone only, all devices, work included or not. Comparing your figure to a headline average is close to meaningless unless the definitions match.
▸How much screen time is too much?
There is no established threshold for adults. The better-supported findings concern timing and content — screens close to bedtime displacing sleep, and passive scrolling — rather than a raw hourly limit.
▸Does my screen time report include work?
Usually only for the device it runs on. A phone report will not see your work laptop, and a laptop report will not distinguish a spreadsheet from a video. Split work out under More options if you want a personal figure.
▸Why divide by waking hours instead of 24?
Because sleep was never available to spend on anything else. A share of waking time tells you what proportion of your usable day a screen occupies, which is the comparison people actually mean.
