NFL Jock Tax Calculator

A footballer pays income tax in every state he plays in. So does everyone else who works across state lines — but most people never notice, because states set filing thresholds before the obligation bites. Athletes are written out of those thresholds by name, and states source their pay by duty days: days spent on team business. Three days in Minnesota out of 170 in the season, and Minnesota taxes 3/170ths of the salary.

The part almost every calculator gets wrong

States do not walk that sliver up their brackets from the bottom. They use the effective rate method: work out what the player would owe if he earned his entire salary in that state, then charge that share of it.

On a graduated schedule the difference is enormous. Take $353,000 of a $10m salary sourced to California. Up California's brackets from 1%, that slice would cost a few thousand dollars. California instead computes the tax on the full $10m — an effective rate above 9% — and charges 3/170ths of that. Same income, several times the tax. Every state does it this way for athletes.

Why residence is the lever players actually pull

The home state taxes everything, wherever earned, then credits what was paid elsewhere — but only up to what it would itself have charged on that income. So:

• Play in a state that taxes less than home and your total does not change; you have just moved which government gets paid.
• Play in a state that taxes more and you pay the difference on top.
• Live somewhere with no income tax and there is no home bill and nothing to credit — but the signing bonus, which is taxable only where you live, escapes state tax completely.

That last line is why so many players establish residence in Florida, Texas, Nevada or Tennessee before signing. It does not help with the club's own state, which still takes the duty days spent there — most of the season — but on a bonus it is the whole ball game.

What this uses

The real 2026 regular-season schedule, so the away states are the ones actually on the fixture list, including the eight games played abroad where no US state can tax the duty days at all. Rates are each state's own published schedule, the same figures behind every other tax calculator here.

What it does not model

Pay is a figure you enter, not a claim about any particular player's contract. City and county income taxes are left out and they matter here: Philadelphia, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Detroit and Kansas City all tax visiting athletes on top of the state. Nor does it model payroll tax, the AMT, agent fees, escrow, or the treatment of a signing bonus by the handful of states that argue it is conditional.
