About this calculator
Most courses don't average every assignment equally. Homework might be 20% of the grade and the final 35%, so a 90 on the final moves your grade far more than a 90 on a homework set. Your course grade is a weighted average: each category's score times its weight, added up. This calculator does that for up to six categories and translates the result to a letter.
How to use it
Copy the weights from your syllabus and your current average in each category from the gradebook. Categories 4–6 are under More options; a category with weight 0 is ignored. If your weights don't add up to 100% — say the final hasn't happened yet — the calculator normalizes by the weights you did enter and tells you so. That gives your grade "so far", which is exactly what you feed into the Final Grade Calculator.
Why divide by the total weight
Weighted average = Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ weight. When the weights total 100% the division is invisible (÷ 1), but it's what makes the formula work when they don't. Entering 20/20/25 that sum to 65 and dividing by 65 gives the average of the work completed; forgetting to divide would give a number around 55%, which is meaningless.
Reading the results
- Weighted grade is your percentage. The table shows how many points each category contributes; they add up to the grade, so you can see which category is dragging you down or carrying you.
- Letter grade uses the common US scale (A 93+, A− 90, B+ 87, …, D− 60, F below 60). Schools differ — some don't use plus/minus, some set A at 90 — so treat it as a default and check your syllabus.
- Points to the next letter tells you how much your overall percentage has to rise. Combined with the weights, that tells you what to focus on: if the final is 35% of the grade, every point on the final is 0.35 points on your course grade.
Common mistakes
- Entering raw points (45/50) instead of a percentage (90%). Convert first.
- Double-counting: if the syllabus lists "exams 40%" and also "midterm 20%, final 20%", use one set or the other.
- Averaging category percentages without weights. A 100% homework average and a 60% exam average are not an 80 unless they carry equal weight.
Frequently asked questions
▸How do I calculate a weighted grade?
Multiply each category's score by its weight, add them up, and divide by the total of the weights. Homework 92 × 20% + quizzes 85 × 20% + midterm 78 × 25% + final 88 × 35% = 85.7%.
▸What if my weights don't add up to 100%?
The calculator divides by whatever they do add up to, giving your average over the work completed so far. That's the number to use as 'current grade' when planning for a final exam.
▸What letter grade is 85.7%?
A B on the standard scale (83–86.99%). A B+ starts at 87%, so you'd need 1.3 more points.
▸Is this the same as GPA?
No. This is a single course's percentage. GPA averages letter grades across courses, weighted by credits — use the GPA Calculator for that.
