About this calculator
"One dog year equals seven human years" is neat and wrong. Dogs mature fast — a one-year-old can reproduce — then age at a rate that depends heavily on size, with Great Danes old at seven and Chihuahuas spry at twelve. This calculator gives two better answers side by side.
Method 1: the veterinary size chart
The chart used by the AVMA and AKC counts a dog's first year as about 15 human years and the second as about 9 more (24 total), then adds roughly 4 human years per dog year for small breeds, rising to 7 or more for giant breeds. It reflects what vets see: big dogs get grey muzzles, arthritis and age-related disease years earlier. Fractional ages are interpolated between rows.
Method 2: the epigenetic clock
In 2020 researchers at UC San Diego compared DNA methylation — chemical marks that accumulate with age — in 104 Labrador retrievers and in humans, and found the two species' patterns line up on a logarithmic curve: human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31. It says a 1-year-old dog is like a 31-year-old human, a 4-year-old like a 53-year-old, and the pace then slows so a 14-year-old dog is around 73. The formula captures the early sprint of development well but was fitted to one breed, so it ignores the size effect that the chart captures.
Which to use
For a puppy or a young adult of any breed, the two methods disagree a lot (a 2-year-old is "24" on the chart and "42" on the clock) — the clock is arguably closer biologically, the chart closer to how we think about life stages. Past age 6, the chart's size adjustment matters more: a 10-year-old giant breed is genuinely elderly. The calculator shows both, plus the old ×7 figure for comparison.
Life stages
Puppy (to 1 year), young adult (1–3), mature adult, then senior when the dog enters roughly the last quarter of its expected lifespan — about 11 for small breeds, 10 for medium, 8 for large and 7 for giant. Senior dogs benefit from twice-yearly vet checks, weight management and joint care.
Lifespans
Median lifespans run from about 14–16 years for small breeds to 8–10 for giants; mixed-breed dogs live slightly longer than purebreds of the same size, and lean dogs live about two years longer than overweight ones.

No. Dogs age fastest in their first two years (roughly 24 human years' worth) and then 4–7 human years per year depending on size. The ×7 rule overstates a puppy's maturity and understates a big dog's old age.
▸What is the 16 ln(age) + 31 formula?
A 2020 UC San Diego study aligned DNA-methylation aging in Labradors with humans and found human age ≈ 16 × ln(dog age) + 31. It puts a 1-year-old dog at 31 human years and an 8-year-old at 64.
▸When is a dog considered a senior?
