How this is worked out
The formula
1 ft² = 0.09290304 m² (exact; from 1 ft = 0.3048 m) 1 acre = 43,560 ft² = 4,046.8564224 m² 1 ha = 10,000 m² 1 mi² = 640 acres = 2.589988 km² value in unit B = value in m² ÷ (m² per unit B)

About this calculator
Enter an area in any unit and see all the others. Area units are squares of length units, so the exact 1959 definitions of the inch, foot and yard fix everything here — a square foot is exactly 0.09290304 m², and an acre exactly 4,046.8564224 m².
The units
Square feet, square yards, square inches are what they say: the area of a square with that side. Nine square feet make a square yard; 144 square inches make a square foot.
Acre — the old English "day's ploughing", now fixed at 43,560 square feet (a 660 × 66 ft strip, or roughly 209 × 209 ft). US land is sold by the acre; 640 acres make a square mile, and a quarter-section farm is 160 acres.
Hectare — 10,000 m², a 100 m square, about 2.47 acres. It's the standard land unit almost everywhere outside the US. A square kilometer is 100 hectares.
Square meter — the SI unit, used for apartments, houses and building plots in most of the world. Multiply by 10.764 for square feet.
Quick mental conversions
- Square meters to square feet: multiply by 10.8 (or by 11 and knock off 2%). An 80 m² flat is about 860 ft².
- Square feet to square meters: divide by 10.8, or multiply by 0.093.
- Acres to hectares: multiply by 0.4. Hectares to acres: multiply by 2.5.
- An acre is about three-quarters of an American football field (without the end zones) and slightly smaller than a soccer pitch's half.
Floor area conventions
Real-estate square footage in the US measures the outside of exterior walls for houses and the inside for condos; European square meters are usually internal "usable" area. The same home can differ by 10–15% between conventions, so check which one a listing uses before comparing.
Perimeter vs. area
Doubling the sides of a plot quadruples its area. A 100 × 100 ft lot is 10,000 ft² (0.23 acre); a 200 × 200 ft lot is 40,000 ft² (0.92 acre). To find the area of a room or plot from its dimensions, use the square footage calculator, then convert here.
