About this calculator
Enter a volume and see it in every common unit at once, from teaspoons to cubic yards. The US customary units are all derived from the gallon of exactly 231 cubic inches (3.785411784 L), and the cubic units from the inch, so every factor here is exact.
Kitchen units
The US cooking system is a ladder of doublings and triplings: 3 teaspoons to a tablespoon, 2 tablespoons to a fluid ounce, 8 fluid ounces to a cup, 2 cups to a pint, 2 pints to a quart, 4 quarts to a gallon. A cup is therefore 16 tablespoons or 48 teaspoons, and a gallon is 16 cups.
Two cups exist in the US: the customary cup of 236.59 mL used here, and the "legal" cup of exactly 240 mL that appears on nutrition labels. The difference is 1.4% — irrelevant in cooking. Metric-country recipes use a 250 mL cup, a 15 mL tablespoon and a 5 mL teaspoon; Australian tablespoons are 20 mL.
US vs. imperial
British and US pints, quarts and gallons are different sizes. The imperial gallon is 4.546 L (20% bigger than the US gallon), and the imperial pint of 568 mL is the one served in UK pubs. Confusingly the imperial fluid ounce is slightly smaller than the US one (28.41 vs 29.57 mL) because there are 20 to the pint rather than 16. This converter uses US units; the table shows both.
Cubic units
A cubic foot is 7.48 US gallons or 28.3 liters — the unit of refrigerator capacity and natural-gas billing. A cubic yard (27 ft³, 202 gallons, 765 liters) is how concrete, mulch and soil are sold. A cubic meter is exactly 1,000 liters.
Volume isn't weight
A cup of flour weighs about 125 g and a cup of water about 237 g; "fluid ounces" measure volume while "ounces" measure weight, and they only coincide for water. For cups-to-grams by ingredient, use the cooking converter.
