About this calculator
Here's the honest version: there is no precise formula for how much water you need, because thirst and the kidneys regulate it very well in healthy people. What there is are population reference values and a few well-founded adjustments. This calculator combines them into a reasonable daily target and shows exactly how it was built.
What the evidence actually says
The US National Academies (2004) set an adequate intake of 3.7 L a day for men and 2.7 L for women from all sources — roughly 20% of which comes from food, leaving about 3.0 L and 2.2 L from drinks. The European Food Safety Authority's 2010 figures are a bit lower: 2.5 L and 2.0 L total. These are medians of what healthy people consume, not thresholds below which harm occurs.
The famous "eight 8-ounce glasses" (1.9 L) was never a research finding. Heinz Valtin traced it in 2002 and found no scientific basis; it seems to have come from a 1945 nutrition recommendation that also noted most of that water is already in food.
How this estimate works
- Baseline: 35 mL per kilogram of body weight, a rule of thumb used widely in clinical nutrition. For a 75 kg adult that's 2.6 L — close to the NASEM beverage figure, which is why it's a sensible anchor.
- Exercise: about 0.6 L per hour of sweating, the middle of the ACSM's 0.4–0.8 L/h guidance for keeping fluid loss under 2% of body weight.
- Climate: an extra 0.5–1.0 L in hot or humid conditions, in line with military and occupational heat guidance.
All beverages count. Coffee and tea are mildly diuretic but still net hydrating at normal intakes.
Reading the result
Treat the number as a ceiling for a normal day, not a quota to force down. If your urine is pale yellow and you're rarely thirsty, you're fine — for most healthy adults thirst is an accurate guide. Situations where drinking to a target genuinely matters: long endurance sessions, heat, older age (thirst blunts), illness with fever or diarrhoea, pregnancy and breastfeeding, kidney stones.
When more is harmful
Overdrinking dilutes blood sodium. Exercise-associated hyponatremia has killed marathoners who drank at every aid station; the fix is drinking to thirst during events and including sodium in long ones. Sustained intake above about 1 L per hour outpaces the kidneys.

▸How much water should I drink a day?
Reference values are about 3.0 L (men) and 2.2 L (women) from drinks, more with exercise and heat. This calculator personalises that by body weight, activity and climate. Healthy adults can trust thirst for the fine-tuning.
▸Is the 8 glasses of water a day rule true?
No — it has no scientific basis. Eight 8-oz glasses is 1.9 L, which happens to be in the right ballpark for a smaller sedentary adult but is not a requirement.
▸Does coffee count toward water intake?
Yes. Caffeine's diuretic effect is small at habitual intakes, and coffee and tea are net hydrating. So do milk, juice and the water in food.
▸How much should I drink during exercise?
About 0.4–0.8 L per hour, adjusted to sweat rate — weigh yourself before and after a session; each kilogram lost is roughly a litre. Add sodium for anything over 90 minutes.
▸Can you drink too much water?
Yes. Drinking well beyond thirst, especially during long exercise, can cause hyponatremia (low blood sodium), which is dangerous. Keep sustained intake under about 1 L per hour.
