About this calculator
Enter a speed in any unit and get every other unit plus the equivalent running pace. Because the mile, the hour and the nautical mile are all exactly defined, the factors are exact: 1 mph is exactly 1.609344 km/h and 0.44704 m/s.
The units
- mph — road speeds in the US and UK.
- km/h — road speeds nearly everywhere else.
- m/s — the SI unit, used in physics, wind reports in many countries, and sprint analysis.
- ft/s — ballistics, engineering, and fall/impact calculations in the US.
- knots — nautical miles per hour, used at sea and in aviation. One knot is 1.852 km/h, or about 1.15 mph, so a 20-knot wind is a 23 mph wind.
Speed and pace
Runners think in pace (time per distance) rather than speed. Pace is the reciprocal: 6 mph is 10:00 per mile; 12 km/h is 5:00 per kilometer. The converter shows both paces for any speed, and the table lists common paces with their speeds — handy for setting a treadmill, which usually shows mph or km/h. Wind and weather
Meteorologists mix units: US forecasts use mph, marine forecasts knots, and many countries m/s or km/h. The Beaufort scale runs from 0 (calm) to 12 (hurricane, ≥ 64 knots ≈ 74 mph ≈ 118 km/h). Aircraft speeds are given in knots and Mach number; Mach 1 at sea level in standard conditions is about 340 m/s (761 mph), falling to about 295 m/s at cruising altitude because the air is colder.

Results are shown to four decimals. The Mach figure uses the sea-level standard-atmosphere speed of sound (340.29 m/s at 15 °C) and is only indicative.
