Shoe Size Converter
Convert a measured foot length to US, UK, EU and Japanese shoe sizes for men, women and children, using the Brannock Device's own published scales.
Shoe Size Converter: with the default inputs, us size is 9.
Heel to longest toe, standing, on paper against a wall. Measure both feet and use the longer one.

Assumptions
- All conversions are fitted to the Brannock Device Company's published scale-comparison chart, which states 0.333 in per size for the US and UK scales, 0.66 cm for EU, and 1 cm for Mondopoint.
- Two UK figures are given because the industry disagrees: Brannock's own scale is half a size below US men's, while most major retailers and the ISO conversion tables use a full size.
- Sizes are rounded to the nearest half. EU sizes are commonly sold whole, so round up when the result lands on a half.
- The Brannock junior scales include growth room and do not align with adult scales of the same number.
- Width is not estimated. For many people it determines fit more than length does.
- Manufacturer sizing is not standardised — the Brannock chart's own footnote says variations exist within the same scale between countries. This is a starting point for trying shoes on, not a guarantee of fit.

"Y" marks the youth (big kid) scale, which restarts at 1 after infant/toddler 13. The junior scales include growth room, so they do not line up with adult sizes of the same number.
How this is worked out
The formula
US men's = 3 × foot length (in) − 22 US women's = 3 × foot length (in) − 21 UK adult = 3 × foot length (in) − 22.5 (Brannock device scale) UK adult = 3 × foot length (in) − 23 (most retailers, and the ISO tables) EU adult = foot length (cm) ÷ 0.66 + 2.92 Japan / Mondopoint = foot length (cm) Anglo-American sizes advance 1/3 inch (one barleycorn) per size; EU sizes advance 0.66 cm (the Paris point); Mondopoint advances 1 cm.

About this calculator
Shoe sizes are three unrelated measuring systems wearing the same word. Britain and America count in barleycorns — a third of an inch, fixed by Edward II in 1324 as the length of three grains of barley end to end. Continental Europe counts in Paris points, two-thirds of a centimetre, from French cobblers. Japan and the ISO's Mondopoint system just state the foot length in centimetres, which is the only one of the three that a stranger could guess.
How to measure
Stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall, at the end of the day, wearing the socks you would wear with the shoes. Mark the tip of your longest toe — which is not always the big toe — and measure from the wall. Do both feet. Most people have one foot 3–6 mm longer, and the shoe has to fit that one.
Where these numbers come from
The conversions here are read off the Brannock Device Company's own published scale-comparison chart — the metal foot-measuring device in every shoe shop, and as close to a reference standard as this field has. It lays every scale against a common inch ruler and states each step size: a third of an inch for the US and UK scales, 0.66 cm for EU, 1 cm for Mondopoint.
Two results from that chart are worth knowing because they contradict the rules of thumb people repeat:
- On the Brannock scales, a US women's size is one size larger than the men's size for the same foot, not the 1.5 you will see quoted everywhere. The 1.5 figure describes how manufacturers label shoes built on different lasts, not how feet map to scales.
- Brannock puts US men's half a size above UK. Most of the industry disagrees: Nike, Nordstrom, Clarks and Dr. Martens all publish a full size, and so do the ISO conversion tables. This calculator shows both, because there is no version that is simply correct.
How deep does the inconsistency go? Nike's men's and women's size charts, on the same website, map the identical US men's 6.5 / women's 8 pair to different UK sizes, different centimetre values and different foot lengths. The NFL commissioned a whole 3D foot-scanning fitting system rather than trust size labels, on the grounds that manufacturers "employ a range of sizing rubrics, which introduces shoe size and shape variability between and even within footwear companies."
That is why a chart is a starting point rather than an answer.
Reading the results
The "other adult scale" line matters for unisex models — running shoes, most skate and outdoor brands — which are almost always cut on the men's last. EU sizes are usually sold whole, so when you land on a half, size up. Japanese sizing is the friendliest thing in footwear: 26.5 means a 26.5 cm foot, and that is the entire system.
Children
Children's sizing runs 0–13 and then restarts at 1 for youth. The Brannock junior scales build in growth room, so a child's 5 is not an adult 5. Children rarely complain about shoes that are too small, so measure every two to three months up to age three and every four to six months after, leaving a thumb's width past the longest toe.
The unavoidable caveat
The chart's own footnote says it: "Often variations exist among the same scale from one country to another." Width, which this calculator does not estimate, often matters more than length. Use the number to pick what to try on.
Frequently asked questions
▸What size shoe am I?
Measure your foot heel-to-toe standing, then apply 3 × the length in inches minus 22 for US men's, or minus 21 for US women's. A 10.3-inch foot is a US men's 9 or a women's 10.
▸How do I convert US to EU shoe sizes?
Go through foot length rather than directly. A US men's 9 is a 26.3 cm foot, which is a EU 42. EU sizes advance 0.66 cm — the Paris point — so each EU size is about two-thirds of a US half-size.
▸What is the difference between men's and women's sizes?
On the Brannock scales, a women's size is one number larger than the men's size for the same foot. Retail charts usually say 1.5, because that reflects how shoes built on different lasts are labelled rather than how feet measure.
▸What does Mondopoint mean?
It is the ISO 9407 system: the size is simply the foot length in millimetres or centimetres, optionally with a width. Japanese sizing works the same way, which is why a Japanese 26.5 fits a 26.5 cm foot.
▸Why do brands fit differently at the same size?
Because there is no enforced standard. Each brand cuts its own last, and the Brannock chart itself notes that the same scale varies between countries. Nike's own men's and women's charts disagree with each other about the UK size of the same shoe.
▸Is a US 9 a UK 8 or a UK 8.5?
Both answers are in use. Brannock's device scale says 8.5; Nike, Nordstrom, Clarks, Dr. Martens and the ISO conversion tables say 8. The calculator shows both, and the brand's own chart should win.
