About this calculator

A digital image has no physical size. It has a pixel count, and it acquires a size only when you decide how many of those pixels to squeeze into each inch of paper. That number is the DPI (strictly PPI for an image — see below), and the whole calculation is one division: 1920 pixels at 300 DPI is 6.4 inches of paper.

How to use it

Enter the pixel dimensions from your file and the resolution you plan to print at, and you get the physical size in whatever unit you pick. Open More options and enter a print width you want, and it runs backwards: it tells you the DPI you would actually be getting at that size, and whether that is good enough. That reverse question — "can I print this at A2?" — is the one people usually have.

What the numbers mean

  • 300 DPI is the print industry's default for anything held in the hand. It is roughly the limit of what an eye at 25–30 cm resolves.
  • 240 DPI is genuinely indistinguishable from 300 for most photographic subjects, and many labs print there.
  • 150 DPI is the standard for large-format work — posters, banners, exhibition graphics — because you stand further back.
  • 72 DPI is a historical screen number with no modern meaning; a billboard printed at 20 DPI looks perfect from across a car park.

The right resolution is really a function of viewing distance, not of print size. A rule that works: required DPI ≈ 3438 ÷ (viewing distance in inches), which comes from one arcminute of visual acuity. At 12 inches that gives 287 DPI; at 10 feet, 29 DPI.

DPI versus PPI, and the metadata myth

PPI (pixels per inch) describes the image; DPI (dots per inch) describes the printer's ink dots, and an inkjet lays down many small dots to make one image pixel — which is why a "1440 DPI" printer is not asking for a 1440 PPI file. In everyday use the words are interchangeable and this calculator treats them as such.

The DPI tag stored in a JPEG or TIFF header is not a property of the pixels. Changing it from 72 to 300 in Photoshop without resampling changes nothing about the file except the default size a program suggests. Only the pixel count and the size you print at matter. If someone asks for "a 300 DPI image", what they mean is "enough pixels for the size we are printing".

Where this breaks down

  • Upscaling. Nothing here creates detail. AI upscalers genuinely help on soft subjects and invent plausible nonsense on text and faces.
  • Bleed and trim. Commercial printing needs 3 mm of bleed beyond the finished size, so your image must be slightly larger than the print.
  • Sharpness beats resolution. A slightly soft 24 MP file prints worse than a critically sharp 12 MP one. Print resolution is a ceiling, not a promise.
  • Aspect ratio. 3:2 camera files do not fit 8×10 paper. Something gets cropped — decide what before the printer decides for you.

Frequently asked questions

What size can I print a 1920×1080 image?

6.4 × 3.6 inches at 300 DPI, or 12.8 × 7.2 inches at 150 DPI for a poster. Divide the pixel dimensions by the DPI you want.

How many megapixels do I need for a 16×20 print?

At 300 DPI, 4800 × 6000 pixels — 28.8 MP. At a more realistic 200 DPI for a print that size it is 3200 × 4000, or 12.8 MP.

Is DPI the same as PPI?

Strictly no: PPI is image pixels per inch, DPI is printer ink dots per inch, and printers lay several dots per pixel. In everyday use they are used interchangeably, and this calculator treats them as the same.

Does changing the DPI in the file metadata improve quality?

No. Without resampling it changes only the size a program suggests by default. Quality is decided entirely by the pixel count and how large you print it.

Is 72 DPI still a thing?

Only as a historical default. Screens vary from about 96 to over 450 PPI, and the number stored in an image file has no effect on how a browser displays it — CSS pixels do.
