About this calculator
This calculator looks up the two largest parts of active-duty pay: basic pay, set by your pay grade and years of service, and the Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH), set by your duty station, grade and whether you have dependents. Both come from the official 2026 tables — DFAS's active duty pay table (updated Jan. 15, 2026) and the Defense Travel Management Office's BAH rate files, including their mid-year corrections — so the figures match your LES rather than an estimate.
How to use it
Pick your pay grade, enter your years of service for pay purposes, and the ZIP code of your permanent duty station. BAH follows the duty station, not where you choose to live: a sailor stationed in San Diego gets the San Diego rate whether they live on base, in the city, or across the county line. Tick with dependents if you have a spouse or children. The results give you monthly and yearly totals, the housing area your ZIP falls in, every grade's BAH for that area, and your grade's pay at every step of the table.
Reading the results
- Basic pay is taxable income, and it is what most other entitlements and your retirement are calculated from.
- BAH is not taxable, which is why a dollar of BAH is worth more than a dollar of basic pay. It is meant to cover most of the cost of renting a typical home for your grade in that area.
- Years of service move you along the table on the anniversary of your pay entry base date: the "over 4" rate starts the day you complete four years.
- O-1E to O-3E are the higher rates for officers with more than four years of prior enlisted or warrant service.
What this does not include
BAS (Basic Allowance for Subsistence), special and incentive pays (flight, sea, hazardous duty, enlistment and retention bonuses), cost-of-living allowances, and deductions for taxes, TSP and SGLI are not included — your LES lists them. Duty stations in U.S. territories and overseas receive Overseas Housing Allowance (OHA) instead of BAH, which this calculator flags rather than guesses.
Frequently asked questions
▸How much does an E-4 make in 2026?
An E-4 with over 2 years of service earns $3,303.00 a month in basic pay ($39,636 a year), rising to $3,815.40 at over 6 years — plus BAH, which depends on the duty station.
▸Is BAH based on where I live or where I'm stationed?
Where you're stationed. BAH is set by the ZIP code of your permanent duty station, so living somewhere cheaper or more expensive doesn't change it.
▸Is BAH taxable?
No. BAH and BAS are tax-free allowances; basic pay is taxable. That's why comparing military pay with a civilian salary needs the allowances grossed up for tax.
▸Why isn't BAS included?
BAS is a flat monthly rate — one for enlisted members and one for officers — paid on top of basic pay and BAH. It isn't in this calculator's data yet, so it's left out rather than estimated; your LES shows it.
