BMI Prime Calculator

BMI Prime is your BMI divided by 25, so 1.00 sits exactly on the WHO overweight line. Shows the ratio, the BMI behind it and the WHO category.

BMI Prime Calculator: with the default inputs, bmi prime is 0.95.

BMI Prime is a restatement of BMI, and BMI is a population screening measure. It uses only height and weight, so it cannot tell muscle from fat, and it says nothing about where fat sits or about anyone's health. It is not a target to train towards.

Assumptions
  • This is an estimate for education. It does not diagnose anything and does not replace clinical judgement.
  • BMI Prime is BMI divided by the upper limit of the healthy range; the default denominator of 25 is the WHO adult overweight threshold.
  • The WHO category shown alongside always uses the WHO cut-offs of 18.5, 25 and 30, regardless of the denominator you choose.
  • WHO's adult cut-offs do not apply to children and adolescents, who are assessed on age- and sex-specific growth references.
  • BMI uses only height and weight. It cannot distinguish lean mass from fat mass and is a population screening measure, not a measure of an individual's health.

WHO defines adult overweight as a BMI of 25 or more and obesity as 30 or more, with underweight below 18.5. The BMI Prime column is simply each BMI divided by 25.

How this is worked out

The formula

BMI      = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)²
BMI Prime = BMI ÷ 25

25 is the WHO adult overweight threshold, so BMI Prime 1.00 sits exactly on it.
0.74 (= 18.5 ÷ 25) is the bottom of the WHO healthy range.
  1.20 (= 30 ÷ 25) is the WHO obesity threshold.

Weight at BMI Prime 1.00 = 25 × height (m)²

About this calculator

This is an estimate for education. It does not diagnose anything and does not replace clinical judgement. BMI Prime is a presentational trick, not a new measurement: it is your BMI divided by the upper limit of the healthy range, which WHO puts at 25 kg/m² for adults. The whole point is that the answer is a plain ratio. A BMI Prime of 1.00 sits exactly on the overweight threshold; 1.15 means 15% above it; 0.90 means 10% below it.

Why anyone bothered

BMI has an awkward property: the number itself carries no intuition. Told that your BMI is 27.4, you have to remember where the thresholds sit before that means anything, and the units — kilograms per square metre — do not correspond to anything you can picture. Gadzik made the case for the ratio in Connecticut Medicine in 2006, arguing that relating a person's weight to their own upper weight limit conveys more than an isolated BMI figure does.

Because the ratio is linear in weight, BMI Prime has a second useful reading. At a fixed height, BMI Prime is simply your weight divided by the weight that would put you at BMI 25. So 1.15 also means "15% heavier than the weight at the top of the healthy range for my height" — and this calculator shows you that weight in pounds or kilograms directly.

Reading the result

  • Under 0.74 — below BMI 18.5, WHO's underweight threshold.
  • 0.74 to under 1.00 — inside WHO's healthy range.
  • 1.00 to under 1.20 — WHO's overweight band (BMI 25 to under 30).
  • 1.20 and above — WHO's obesity threshold (BMI 30 and above).

Under More options you can change the denominator if you are working from a guideline that sets a different upper limit. The WHO category shown alongside always stays anchored to 25, so if you change the denominator the two will no longer agree — the calculator says so.

What it cannot tell you

Everything that is wrong with BMI is equally wrong with BMI Prime, because it is the same number rescaled. BMI uses height and weight and nothing else. It cannot distinguish muscle from fat, it does not know where fat is distributed, and at the individual level it is a poor proxy for body composition — a heavily muscled athlete and a sedentary adult of the same height and weight get the same figure. WHO itself describes BMI as a surrogate marker of fatness and notes that additional measurements such as waist circumference help.

It is a screening measure designed for describing populations. It is not a diagnosis, it is not a health verdict, and it is not a target. If a number here concerns you, the useful next step is a conversation with a clinician who can look at the rest of the picture — waist circumference, blood pressure, blood tests, fitness, family history and what you actually eat and do.

Frequently asked questions

What is BMI Prime?

Your BMI divided by 25, the WHO adult overweight threshold. A BMI Prime of 1.00 means you are exactly on that threshold; 1.15 means 15% above it.

What is a normal BMI Prime?

0.74 to just under 1.00 corresponds to WHO's healthy BMI range of 18.5 to just under 25. Below 0.74 is WHO's underweight band, and 1.20 and above is the obesity threshold.

Why divide by 25 rather than anything else?

Because 25 kg/m² is where WHO puts the adult overweight threshold, which makes 1.00 a meaningful line rather than an arbitrary one.

Is BMI Prime better than BMI?

It is easier to read, and nothing more. It is the same measurement rescaled, so it inherits every limitation of BMI — it cannot tell muscle from fat and says nothing about an individual's health.

Does a BMI Prime above 1.00 mean I need to lose weight?

No. It means your height and weight put you above one population screening threshold. Whether that matters for you is a clinical question involving waist circumference, blood pressure, blood results, fitness and history — not a calculation.
